The first day of the new semester was also the 90th anniversary of our university. The Department of Traffic Science welcomed new first-year students and students who had just joined the two-year technical program. Their presence showed the unity of the department and brought new energy to it.

For this event, we invited former Deputy Director-General Wang Long-Chih to share six lessons he learned from six benefactors during his 43 and a half years in the police force. Although he graduated from the Department of Police Administration, he later led the National Highway Police Bureau, the Aviation Police Bureau, and the Railway Police Bureau. He handled many major incidents, so it was a rare chance for us to learn from him.

Mr. Wang began with his first benefactor. His father had suffered a stroke, and Mr. Wang often worked late while caring for his family. His superior moved him to a precinct chief position near his home so that he could manage both work and family.

Mr. Wang then shared how to face problems. He said we should stay calm and decisive, and have the courage to take responsibility. A crisis is when a person's value shows. We should stay calm, judge the situation, and act well. We should also become a steady source of support for others.

On leadership, he said leaders should respect the expertise of their staff, avoid creating unnecessary work, and lead by example. Inside the team, a leader wins hearts by working hard and encouraging others. Outside the team, trust is key. A leader should serve the public and treat elected representatives and the media with sincerity and fairness.

He also reminded us to use new technology as a helpful tool, but never to let it change the purpose and principles of our work. In the end, attitude and values matter most. Finally, he urged us to balance family, health, and work, and to think about the needs of others. Benefactors may not always be near, so we should try to become our own benefactors.

The department chair closed the event with a saying: "When the flower blossoms, the butterflies will come." After warm applause, the event ended successfully. Personal effort is only one part of a career. Our attitude toward others, our courage to take responsibility, and mutual trust are just as important. We will remember these lessons in my future police career.
